Paddleboard Yoga

I'm a Stand-up Paddleboard (SUP) yoga instructor, as trained by SUPfit in Brighton. SUP yoga sessions are held each summer on the River Avon at Avon Valley Wildlife Park, Saltford. These are weather dependent - please check the Yoga for Sport Facebook page for up-to-date availability. Please note that you'll need to have done some paddle-boarding before, we can't take out complete beginners.

Benefits
SUP yoga is relatively new to the UK but has huge popularity over in the US. Taking your yoga to the water means fun, humility, core strength, tranquillity and an intense mind-body-water connection. Many of the yoga poses are the same, slightly modified for stability on the board... however they will feel very different!
Stand-up paddling and yoga help to develop better balance and proprioception (that's our ability to feel and adjust our balance without needing to look at where we place our feet or hands). Core strength is essential in keeping upright and effective paddling, so any work on the board will engage and use your core muscles. As with all yoga, time spent moving and holding poses with your breath helps to develop better body awareness and breathing. Being on the water can be both calming and rejuvenating, helping you achieve a relaxed and clear mind whilst enjoying the beautiful surroundings and nature.

Tips
If you're worried about falling in then wear a wetsuit (or neoprene separates) - that way you'll be able to laugh and stay warm if you do take a dip!
The more body parts you take off the board the harder it is to balance, so it's your choice how hard you make it for yourself. Keep your centre of gravity (your belly or feet) over the carry handle in all poses for better stability. You'll find that you stand and kneel more widely than you would on a yoga mat. Savasana is heavenly when you drape your hands into the water |
